John's Small Car Works was started in 1979 by current Carworks proprietor John Schier. Originally a two bay shop specializing in air-cooled Volkswagens, JSCW moved to Lee, NH in December of 1980 when John rented two bays in the back building of the current Carworks facility from Dick Fernald, who operated Fernald's Garage next door in the main building.

In January of 1986 John purchased the main building from Dick, who retired from the car business. At this point John began servicing many of Dick's old customers' American cars, prompting the changing of the shop's name from John's Small Car Works to simply Carworks.

In 2009 renovations began to expand Carworks once again with the modernization of the two back bays. Today Carworks features five full height lifts, a far cry from the early days of John's Small Car Works. Despite all these changes John's personalized service and attention to detail are still the hallmarks of the Carworks customer experience.
